From the event announcement:
"Women are the backbone of agriculture and food production in Africa. They form the majority of those employed in the agricultural sector. In Africa, 80% of the agricultural production comes from small farmers, who are mostly rural women.
It therefore follows that empowering women farmers increases income, develops a stable rural livelihood and contributes to ensuring food security. In addition, enhancing women’s access to land, livestock, education, financial services, technology and rural employment generate gains in terms of agricultural production, food security, economic growth and social welfare.
While in most African countries both men and women farmers do not have access to adequate resources, women's access is even more limited due to cultural and traditional factors. In this case, resources include land, technology, farm inputs, and access to credit, amongst others.
COMESA Business Council and Feed the Future East Africa Market Systems Activity, a USAID project, have partnered together with a common vision to promote the empowerment of women in agriculture and trade. This webinar will provide a platform to explore various approaches to enhancing women's access these key resources, towards increasing their participation in agricultural value chains. The outcomes of the webinar will inform strategies and policy areas for advocacy, towards promotion of the role of women in agriculture."
