Position name: Gender Coordinator
[text copied from the FPP's annoucement]
Forest Peoples Programme is a human rights organisation that stands in solidarity with indigenous and other forest peoples to defend their rights to their lands, territories and resources. Indigenous women have long faced a specific burden of discrimination, at times referred to as the triple burden, facing discrimination stemming from their identities as indigenous persons; from the lower socioeconomic status that they often experience; and from their gender roles as women in societies. Indigenous women have acted to address these patterns of discrimination both from within broader indigenous organisations and authorities, and by establishing indigenous women’s networks. Understanding that cultures are not static, and that gender roles and cultural norms are constantly changing, the role for allied organisations in supporting indigenous women and indigenous peoples in advancing the realisation of women’s rights is also evolving.
We are looking for someone to manage and coordinate our gender action plan, which takes an exploratory approach to learning how best rights can be recognised, celebrated and realised for indigenous women. Through a series of learning events, engaging with key leading actors in this space, and in exploratory use of specific advocacy opportunities, we will contribute lessons and build understanding, and will prioritise engagement with existing indigenous women’s networks and spaces.
The role:
To lead and coordinate FPP’s Gender Action Plan including supporting partner organisations in engaging with advocacy on a national, regional and global level, coordinating learning and networking events on gender justice, developing communications products, overseeing a review of FPPs internal policies and procedures and engaging in FPP’s Learning, Monitoring and Evaluations processes.
Duties and key responsibilities:
- Coordinate the implementation of FPP’s Gender Action Plan in close collaboration with FPP’s staff, Gender Group and local partner organisations
- Organise knowledge and networking events (both in person and online) in collaboration with FPP staff, partner organisations and networks on topics relevant to gender justice, including an Africa regional workshop on women’s rights, land and resources
- Support partners in undertaking advocacy in key policy processes (local, national, regional, and international)
- Collaborate with the communications team and FPP staff to create communications materials such as publications, briefings, articles, and blogs
- Contribute to FPP’s internal learning, monitoring and evaluation processes with a gender justice perspective
- Attend meetings and events, including overseas, in support of FPP content work as required.
- Convene FPP’s regular Gender Group meetings
- Contribute to fundraising efforts for gender justice related work
- Any other responsibilities as may reasonably be required from time to time
Skills and Experience:
- Committed to bottom up approach – where indigenous peoples and local communities are supported in achieving their visions for their futures
- Excellent team working skills – ability to work effectively as part of a multi-cultural, dispersed team of FPP staff, partners and movement allies to achieve shared objectives
- Project management skills – experience of the project management cycle including project financial management
- Good networker – able to build new partnerships and alliances, preferably bringing some relevant existing networks to the role
- Content experience – experience of working with indigenous women and/or indigenous peoples on gender issues, or on land rights and wider human rights issues. Lived experience of the content issues being addressed would be beneficial but not essential for the role
- Good communicator – able to communicate effectively with audiences including potential donors through different media including face-to-face
- Language skills – fluency in, or good knowledge of, French and/or Spanish is strongly desirable
- Strong alignment with FPP’s values and principles
Terms:
- Salary in the range £22,000 - £28,000 (pro-rata for part time position), depending on qualifications and experience
- Part-time. The role is expected to require 3 days per week. Working arrangements will be explored for the right candidate or to support gender inclusion and diversity
- 18-month contract with the possibility of extension (funding dependent). Please note that we are not able to sponsor an employment visa for the UK.
- FPP is open to discuss location for the right candidate but a candidate based in the Global South is preferred. Please note that this role would require some foreign travel.
- Benefits include: pro rata equivalent of 20 days leave per year, plus all UK public holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year when the office is closed.
- Reporting to: Lucy Claridge, Head of the Strategic Legal Response Centre FPP strongly encourages female candidates, and candidates with an indigenous background, to apply for this position.
