Job Summary:
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a Research Analyst (RA) for a full-time, one-year, fixed-term, exempt, renewable appointment in the Environment and Production Technology Division (EPTD). The Research Analyst will support research and evaluation on gender and rural development including household survey data collection and analysis. The RA would also play a critical role in communications and capacity building to apply research findings to policy and practice.
The selected candidate will support research that seeks to understand why there are gender gaps in the adoption of agricultural technologies and natural resource practices to support adaptation to climate change, and ways to strengthen women’s rights to resources, particularly land and water, within households, communities, and institutions. The position involves collaborating with other divisions and projects at IFPRI working on gender and agriculture, including the Gender, Assets, and Agriculture Project ( GAAP2 ) and the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) . This position is based in the Washington, D.C. headquarters of IFPRI with travel overseas. Final title and grade will be determined based on experience.
Essential Duties:
- Providing research assistance and conducting literature reviews on gender, social inclusion, and rural development research and practice
- Assisting with the development and implementation of quantitative surveys in developing countries, including questionnaire development, field team training and development of software applications for recording interview responses on tablet computers
- Organization, cleaning, manipulation and analysis of large household data sets
- Help build capacity of partners to address gender and social equity in rural development research and program strategies
- Communicate research findings to diverse audiences.
- Assisting in the drafting and editing of discussion papers, blogs, policy notes, presentations, research proposals, briefs, etc.
- Build partnerships with donors, government agencies, research institutes, and/or NGOs in-country to better understand evidence needs and priorities and to collaborate on research
- Participate in knowledge exchanges and remain current on gender, agriculture, and natural resource management academic literature, policies, and best practice
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a related field and three years of relevant professional experience
- Experience working on gender issues in agricultural development and/or environment in developing countries
- Applied econometric skills on cross section and panel data analysis
- Advanced STATA skills
- Demonstrated skills in quantitative research methods, data management, and analysis.
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Excellent writing and communication skills and ability to convey research findings to diverse stakeholders
- Demonstrated professional level of attention to detail and accuracy of work.
- Excellent interpersonal skills along with the ability to work independently and with colleagues from diverse cultures
- Ability and willingness to travel to developing countries
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of gender and environment issues (e.g., natural resource management and governance, climate change adaptation)
- Experience providing technical advice to implementing organizations and donors on gender strategy for programming and research
- Proficiency in more than one language; expertise in French preferred
- Field experience working in developing countries
- Experience in survey design, and conducting and supervising household surveys in developing countries
- Experience with data entry and CAPI software packages (Survey Solutions, CSPro, ODK, etc.)
- Training and experience in methods for designing and conducting causal impact evaluations, including randomized controlled trials (RCT), and other method
- Experience with qualitative research methods, analysis, and NVivo
- Knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) and other spatial data software
Physical Demand & Work environment:
- Employee will sit in an upright position for a long period of time
- Employee will lift between 0-10 pounds.
- Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading.
