The International Potato Center (CIP) seeks an experienced social scientist, knowledgeable in the analysis of gender in agricultural development contexts, to coordinate implementation of the Gender Strategy of the CGIAR Research Program on Roots, Tubers and Bananas for Food Security and Income (RTB).
The Program:
The CGIAR Research Program on Roots, Tubers and Bananas (RTB) is led by the International Potato Center (CIP) with Bioversity International, the International Center for tropical Agriculture (CIAT), the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (Cirad) and includes a wide spectrum of research for development stakeholders. This collaboration, with its combined scale and capacity, will increase the ability to advance research, share knowledge, and enhance uptake to increase research and development impacts. The purpose of RTB is to exploit the underutilized potential of root, tuber, and banana crops to improve nutrition and food security and foster greater gender equity especially among some of the world’s most poor and vulnerable populations.
The position:
You will help the RTB Program to widen the contribution of RTB crops to food security and poverty reduction in ways that equitably benefit rural women and men.
You will provide expert input on gender issues to teams including social and biological scientists, enabling them to strengthen the gender- responsiveness of their research for the development and uptake of new RTB technologies and practices. You will collaborate closely with gender focal points in each center and build a team to mainstream gender. You will be inventive and innovative in finding novel ways to efficiently collect, analyze and communicate gender-disaggregated data to inform and orient the Program’s work. As part of learning-through-doing in RTB, you will support and back-stop targeted research activities on gender in relation to RTB farming and food systems.
The position will be based in Lima (Peru) and involve work in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The gender research coordinator will form part of the Program Management Unit, based in the lead Center and report to the RTB Program Director.
Responsibilities:
Working closely with the gender focal points, and other managers and scientists in the RTB participating Centers, you will guide and coordinate the following:
- Gender action plan; in alignment with the existing RTB gender strategy
- Gender capacity strengthening plan
- Integration of gender‐responsive approaches and methods across the research cycle
- Support and backstopping of ongoing strategic and integrated gender research
- Mainstreaming of gender in planning, monitoring, evaluation and budget of the RTB program
- Including gender as an integrative part of communication and knowledge management in RTB
- Exploration of synergies in gender research with other CGIAR Research Programs via interaction in the CGIAR Gender and Agriculture Research Network
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
- Post-graduate qualification, preferably PhD, in Sociology, Development Economics, Anthropology, Gender Studies. Publications in relevant fields are desirable.Relevant work experience in gender research and analysis of at least 5 years, including fieldwork in Africa, Asia or Latin America. This would be preferably in the context of agricultural research or natural resource management including both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Capability to motivate managers and scientists at all levels of responsibility to actively mainstream gender into research.
- Knowledge of design of projects or programs and experience with M&E
- Good interpersonal skills. Experience working successfully in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams and developing effective partnerships for research. Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English. Knowledge of Spanish or other languages is desirable
Conditions:
