From the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development’s Programme of Action to current efforts underway to achieve universal access to HIV prevention, care, and treatment, the United States has played a leading role in the creation, affirmation, and implementation of international commitments concerning health and rights. These provide tremendous opportunities to work with and on behalf of the largest generation ever of young people.
Last month, the UN Commission on Population and Development (CPD) annual meeting focused on “Fertility, Reproductive Health, and Development”, while next month’s UN High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS (HLM) will focus on “Universal access to HIV prevention, care and treatment”. These are among the most recent and important occasions for the international community to shape policy and commitments to achieve the health and rights of all, including young people.
Please join us to learn more about the importance and implications of these meetings, the pivotal role that young people play both in negotiating and implementing these commitments, and how meeting young people’s health and rights are critical to succeeding as a global community.
Speakers include:
Rachel Arinii Judhistari, The Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women (ARROW), and the Asia and the Pacific Regional Focal Point for Global Youth Coalition on AIDS
Alexandra Garita, International Policy, International Women’s Health Coalition
Daniela Ligiero, Senior Advisor for Gender, Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator
Kathy Hall, Leadership for Adolescent Reproductive Health, Summit Foundation, Moderator
The Youth Health and Rights Coalition (YHRC) is comprised of advocates and implementers who, in collaboration with young people and adult allies, are working to advance the sexual and reproductive rights and health (SRRH) of adolescents and youth around the world. The YHRC advocates with key decision makers to prioritize funding and support for comprehensive adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive rights and health (SRRH) policies and practices. Our goal is to ensure young people in the developing world have the SRRH information, tools, commodities, and quality services necessary to make healthy and informed choices about their own lives.
