Abstract: Given the growing attention to large scale land deals (‘land grabs’), this paper strives to introduce a discussion of the gender dimensions of land deals into the debate. This paper addresses the current information gap on the differential gender effects of large scale land deals that apply in each phase large scale land deals, from negotiation through implementation. In addition to discussing the literature on large scale land deals gender effects of commercialization and contract farming, we present evidence using recent case studies on the gender effects of large scale deals. We identify recommendations for improving gender equity of large-scale land deals and knowledge gaps where further research is needed.
