Abstract: Recent findings from a 2009 mixed methods study in Uganda will be presented regarding the conditions under which women acquire land in the Luwero and Kapchorwa districts and how this relates to security of access to land and women’s subsequent involvement in forestry development projects. The presentation will discuss the role of gender in land tenure, inheritance patterns and security of land access throughout these two districts and will conclude with recommendations for a land tenure policy frameworks that explicitly address gender inclusive land acquisition and a discussion of how integrated efforts and services could trigger rural women’s economic empowerment over time as well as allowing for women’s continuous involvement in forestry development projects.
Allan Bomuhangi holds a Master of Science Degree in Agroforestry and a Bachelors of Community Forestry and Extension (1st Class) from Makerere University, Uganda. He is currently appointed as a Visiting Assistant in Research at Yale University, USA. He has lectured (Teaching assistant) at the Department of Community Forestry and Extension, Makerere University as well as at the Department of Lands and Architectural Studies, Kyambogo University. Allan has rich practical experiences in research and his research interests stem from policy issues and institutional changes for effective natural resource management, gender issues and development, impacts of natural resource policies and practice on smallholder farming systems and livelihoods; conservation, community development modeling and poverty reduction – conservation mechanisms.
