Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is pleased to note the confirmation of Donald K. Steinberg as Deputy Administrator and Nancy E. Lindborg as Assistant Administrator of the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance.
Donald Steinberg previously served as Deputy President for Policy at the International Crisis Group. Prior, to this he spent three decades in U.S. diplomatic service as Ambassador to Angola, Director of the State Department and USAID's Joint Policy Council, Special Representative of the President for Humanitarian Demining, Special Haiti Coordinator, Deputy White House Press Secretary, and Special Assistant for African Affairs to President Clinton on the National Security Council. He was formerly posted in South Africa during the transition from apartheid to non-racial democracy, Brazil, Malaysia, Central African Republic and Mauritius. He also served as senior policy adviser to then-House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt. Mr. Steinberg is a member of the U.N. Civil Society Advisory Group on Women, Peace and Security, a board member of the Women's Refugee Commission, and previously served on the advisory panel to the executive director of the U.N. Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM). He holds a B.A. in economics from Reed College, an M.A. in political economy from the University of Toronto, and an M.S. in journalism from Columbia University.
Nancy Lindborg previously served as President of Mercy Corps, a global relief and development non-profit organization. Ms. Lindborg also served as co-president of the board of directors for the U.S. Global Leadership Campaign. From 2000-2004, she served as chair of the Sphere Project Management Committee, an international initiative to improve the effectiveness and accountability of non-governmental organizations. Ms. Lindborg holds a B.A and M.A. in English literature from Stanford University and an M.P.A. from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
