The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) located in The Hague, one of the world's leading centres of higher education and research in international development studies, has been known for its innovative and exciting MA specialization in Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD). The specialization offers an interdisciplinary, political economy perspective on agricultural and rural development problems and policies, with an emphasis on practical, critical understandings, capacities and skills required of successful professionals in the field of agricultural/rural development. Students develop a critical understanding of the key processes facing the agricultural and rural sectors and the livelihoods of rural people today, with emphasis on the agrarian political economy perspective. They will understand the interconnectedness of local, national and global levels in shaping agrarian labour regimes, paths of accumulation, smallholder-agribusiness relations and rural-urban linkages. They will gain a practical familiarity with the analysis of processes and politics of agrarian change and resource conflict and the political economy of policy making and implementation and practical skills in policy analysis. Gender, class and generational inequalities and their intersections are important cross-cutting themes.
