Women and Global Health
Exploring climate change, food security and global health, and why women are the key to lasting solutions The Obama administration has announced an ambitious global health initiative which seeks to broaden and integrate our approach to global issues, including HIV/AIDS, family planning and reproductive health, neglected tropical diseases, and maternal and child health. This new, more comprehensive global health strategy also embraces a women-centered approach. After years of funding decreases and hostile policies directed at international family planning and reproductive health programs, this initiative marks a welcome change. In our interconnected world, these funding and policy changes not only save and improve lives, but also positively impact other challenges that President Obama prioritized in his recently proposed budget for FY 2011: global health, climate change and food security. Please join IATP and Population Action International (PAI) to explore why a women-centered and rights-based approach is important in our policy responses to climate change mitigation, adaptation and food security. We will discuss how these issues intersect with rapid population growth and how the voices, experiences and health of women are being considered in global conversations.
